I found the Ventshade brand metal window vents (to keep your windows open in the rain w/o getting wet) at Parts America (Western Auto, if they haven't changed the sign, yet).

I suppose anyone who sells Ventshade products could order 'em.
The part number is 14610.
They sold 'em for $24.99 which I figure is about the same as JC Whitney ($21.99+shipping) and a bit faster.

Bill Kelsey contributes:

Awhile ago someone mentioned that well nuts, used to attach the roof luggage racks and wind deflectors, were available from hardware stores. Here is one source:

NAPA #665-2079 (Bag of 3 pieces)
1/4"-20 well nuts with captive brass nut, luggage rack & mirror mtg. Manufactured by Belkamp. about $4.50 a bag

These fit into a 1/2" hole, like the original well-nuts supplied by Jeep. They do not include bolts, but fit the bolts used with FSJ roof racks and wind deflectors (at least, fit the bolts I've tried). They have a thicker pad on top than the well-nuts Jeep used on the FSJs I've seen, so the hardware being fastened tends to be slightly above the surface of the roof. The rubber may compress further over time, however.

Recently someone asked about protecting their windshield while traveling the Alaska Highway. There is a company that sells a clear film that designed to protect your head lights. It's supposed to be "optically correct and distortion free." I haven't used this product so I don't know much more about it. The address of the company is:

To get the wood grain viynl. its a plastic distributor in orlando, florida. i dont know for sure if they have other distribution offices, ( i think they do, but i dont know where) and i am not sure if they ship, its one of those wholesale only things. but i've never had a problem with them selling to me even with out a distributor liscense. any viynl sign shop in your area should be able to order sparcal viynl for you, in the orlando area the sticker shops are a dime a dozen, the are everywhere. good luck, also check on the internet for sparcal, i know farco doesnt have a webpage.

Wants $1,000., but will settle for less! Later, Mac

You can get fiberglas duplicates of the rear widetrack flares for $49 each, and new steel front fenders with the steel widetrack flares already on them for about $80 each. Shipping is additional for both of these.

The front fenders are from JC Whitney (and elsewhere), the rear flares are from

  • Raybuck Autobody Parts
  • RD 4 Box 170
  • Punxsutawney, PA 15767
  • 814-938-5248.

Raybuck has these manufactured for them, and lists the rear flares as "rear wheel flares, fiberglas, 62-94 fullsize Wagoneer/Cherokee", part # 325532-0.

In mid-November, the last time I talked with them, they were awaiting a new supply of flares from their fiberglas jobber.

Art (packrat@thuntek.net) contributes a source for replacement plastic gas tanks.

this guy sells plastic replacement tanks for a reasonable price ($109.95 in 1996 including shipping). He also has sending units. gaskets and lock rings. The tanks are copies of the originals including the fittings and locations (I got a 78-79 replacement), but, and this is a big but, they don't have the flange around the middle which helps mount the steel one to the frame. I was going to mount mine to the skid plate with some straps and then remount the whole thing back in the vehicle. Still haven't done it yet, though.

He makes dupes of many factory tanks, all in plastic, but no oversize tanks. He told me that as long as he copies factory stuff, the engineering is a given. If he made a bigger tank, he would be responsible for the design and the liability insurance would run the cost up too high. Very nice fellow, but I can't remember his name.

Bill Kelsey contributes the following regarding body parts:

From JC Whitney (312-431-6102, also on the internet -- ask for the complete catalogue, not the Jeep only version), you can get:

  • front fenders (75-91 -- but are these really different from 67?) for $79.95 ea
  • front doorskins (62-91) for $129.95 ea
  • complete rear quarter panels (62-91), 4-door, for $49.95 ea (see the catalogue illustration for the placement of the gas tank opening)
  • lower rear section of rear quarter panel (62-91) for $29.95 ea (as an alternative to the entire quarter panel)
  • rocker panels (62-89) for $19.95 ea
  • (I don't know if they will fit, but for rear flooring you might try this -- half-bed repair panels for floor of 62-87 J-10/20/40 pickups ($74.95 ea))

From "I Love Trucks" (1-800-367-8725; 818-993-3111 in CA and AK) you can get:

  • hoods for $189
  • fenders for $89
  • bumpers for $149
  • grills for $54
  • aprons for $139
  • etc
(These are for 75-91 J-10/20/40s, but most parts are the same as the Wagoneer)

325532-0 Rear wheel flares, fiberglas
(62-94 fullsize Wagoneer/Cherokee) $49 ea

This is current as of last month.

I believe they are currently out, but are awaiting more from their supplier, and will take names of those who would like to be notified when they are back in stock. If you want these kept in stock (or want to get a set for that unhappy day when your metal flares finally fall off), give 'em a call.

Steel front fenders with steel flares are available from JC Whitney and other parts suppliers for about $80 each. They may even be available from Raybuck.

Bill Kelsey contributes a source for Spare Tire Carriers:

JC Whitney has 'em, including space for a jerry can, for 74-83 fullsize Cherokees or 62-83 fullsize Wagoneers, for $129.95 (+s&h), less, of course, the standard Whitney 10% discount:

Tire and Gas Can Carrier, pn 19FZ8343N, page 117

The pn includes a catalogue code, so will change slightly in a different issue; the infomation for this issue is:

catalog: 607H (good 'til 31 Jan 1998)
code: AKMWS (you need the code for ordering)
10% discount code: B-09-1).
24 hour ordering phone: 312-431-6102
if ordering, also request free gift 05-1692Y, a 14 month car care calendar which "includes JC Whitney coupons worth more than $350!"

issues to consider:

1- the carrier base mounts through the right rear corner of the vehicle (mounting plates inside the body), which places a good deal of stress on the corner sheetmetal, especially when the tire carrier is open

2 - the carrier interferes with (ie, blocks) the tailgate window switch/crank - so you have to open the carrier to open the window from outside (see issue #1)

3- the carrier attaches to a latch-point bolted to the rear tailgate, with ensuing stress

4- unless the latch is adjusted to tight tolerance (making it harder to open and close), the carrier-to-latch connnection bangs and clangs down the road

From: Daniel Warren
Subject: HAIL HAIL Poly Mounts!

I can't believe it but I actually found a source for polyurethane body mounts and suspension pieces for full size jeeps.

After giving up all hope, I was housecleaning my bookmarks file and came across a URL at least 2 years old. I opened it to see if it was still current and lo and behold a full line of SJ poly and rubber applications is available.

Check out the URL http://www.espo.com

It's a company called Espo Springs and Things and they list the wag body mounts in poly for $95.00 a set. I called them to verify but got a message stating the whole company has packed up for an auto show from today thru sat and they will be back open next week.

Hope this helps someone besides me,

They have a web page, Click here to see it. It is presently under construction, so you won't see anything there yet, and I didn't get the address and other information. Check back in a week or so for more information!

Hey FSJers,

Got my tail light lenses yesterday from Savanna Jones. 79-83, not in the catalog but the parts person gave me the part number to order with, fit perfect on my '64 Wag. One week turn, $25 included UPS, thanks to Jeff Gunn for 'pointing' me to them.

Part numbers 5459551 and 5459552 (rt and lt side) $9.25 ea and $5.75 ups to Texas.

Perhaps some type of cross reference part number table for stuff like shocks, brakes and bearings would be a helpful addition to the tech section of Doc's page.(hint, hint)

Other useful pages found lately:
http://anvil-group.com/yards/4x4.htm State by state wrecking yards with addresses and phone numbers, some have vehicles listed.
