    Axle Gears?

So this is what I have. Stock 89 GW drivetrain, stock gears (2.73). I'll be putting 33's on it after my lift install. This is mostly a daily driver (inside town,) occasional highway and occasional beach/mild wheeling. So the question is 3.31, 3.54 or go 3.73 gears. Also little to no towing unless dreams come true and I get a pop up camper or even better yet a boat (so still light towing at that.)

    Surf, no magic here.

How many % is your tire change?
You need that much ratio change.......

Going from stock, approx. 28" to 33". Using gear ratio calc looks like 3.31 will keep all ratios close to stock

I have a 4" lift and 32" tires and the 3.73s that I put in work great. It runs about 2700 RPMs at 65 MPH. The 3.54s probabaly would have worked fine but I do a little towing with mine and I wanted the extra help in case I needed it.

I did my research and decided on 3.73 for a couple reasons, my use sounds about like yours. Haven't gotten them installed yet so I can't comment on performance...

My vote would be 3.73's. I went from a 32" tire with 2.72's to a 33" with 3.73. I had more "seat of the pants" improvement in performance then when I changed from a 360 to 401.
My driving is about once a week to work(70 miles round trip) and driving the beaches around currituck, NC. Also tow a 19' bowrider throughout the summer, no complaints what so ever.

The bang for the buck just isn't there to swap from 2.73's to 3.31's. It will be better but still poor for towing especially with 33's. I'd go 3.73's or 4.10's. If you think you'll be towing someday, plan ahead. Swapping gears at both ends is an expensive time consuming swap you won't want to do again right away.

And while you are at it, toss in a locker. The 229 is a full time case right?
Go with an ARB up front.

another vote for 3.73 with 33" unless it's a freeway cruiser.
Jeep gauges are for amusement only. Any correlation between them and reality is purely coincidental.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I'll prob go with the 3.73. The locker will have to wait for the next rig

Mine was stock with 28" and 3.31 (stock with tow package I've heard). I went to 32" with 3.73 and the speed is dead on. Nice and smooth with little lag but not too high at highway speed.
I was running 31" with the 3.31 and it was still OK. When I put the 32" on it seemed really off until the back axle was regeared.

Not really. It is a part time case but you can run it full time in 4wd because of the viscous coupler.

The 229 is marketed as a full-time case but actually its a full-time/part-time case because it has a 2WD function unlike a true full-time case like the 219. But yeah you can run a 229 year round in 4WD on any traction surface.

That was the Select-Trac hype from AMC. They did it so well.
