The "J4000" badge is actually generic , J4500, J4600, J4700 or J4800, models ,all have the same "J4000" badge. The third digit : 5, 6, 7, 8 is a mapping with the GVWR : 5000, 6000, 7000 or 8000 lbs. Differences concern mostly axles and springs

The general 4000 badge designations refer to the wheelbase length. the 4th &5th VIN digits (34) confirm it's a J-4000. the more specific 4700 designation refers to how the truck was ordered/equipped according the GVWR. (8th digit of the VIN(Y). The J-4500's(W) 5000GVWR came with a D44 rear axle, The J-4600(X) and 4700(Y), 6000 and 7000 GVWR respectively came with a D-60-2 "semi-floater" rear axle. Good axle but hard to get parts for here in the US. The 4600 and 4700's also came with 12x2" brakes. New drums are impossible to find in the US. For D60-2 axle maint parts your best bet in OZ will prolly be the Land Rover dealer. Early to mid 70/s some of the "heavy duty" specialties LR rigs used that axle.

BTW you may also have a look to the tech library or buy the Jeep "Technical Service Manual" for 72 on ebay or bjsoffroad (book or CD copy)

Thanks Mud89 and Joe, I am hoping the rear end is OK still, I remember Dad saying it had a locker or similar in the rear Diff? or are they LSD's?

Landrover dealers / parts are not as scarce as Jeep so that is helpful

I just shot BJ's an email about their 63-73 Disc Brake conversion, if the currency conversion and freight aren't to much I was thinking about trying to order one. Our Government is currently trying to bring in GST for all imports not just those over $1000 so hopefully I beat that before it starts

If it came from the factory it'll be the Trac-lok LSD.

Hello to you, that's going to be a nice J,looks pretty solid as is,you should have no problem getting bits for that axle through Dana,I'd have to disagree with Joe re LR connection though, salisbury might yield a R&P with mods but nothing else compatible really ...unless ye got dana axled fitted to them for OZ market(doubt that )...anyway nice machine ,good luck with it

Don't fret the Dana/Salisbury thing. Only the LR folks call them Salisbury axles. They are Dana axles built in the Dana factory located in Salisbury, England.

most LR folk round here think they have a dana 60 but it actually only resembles with at best a Common R&P,no other parts from dana,it's a common misconception Joe..but LR heads like to think they have Dana axles
