    Roadtripping Houston to San Francisco!

    Hello,

We are planning a roadtrip from Houston to San Francisco.

    1) any idea in what Jeep we could do it? Anything between those spots for sale decent enough to keep us on the road?

    2) any special Jeep things we need to see on the way there?

    Thanks on forehand,

    dan

    Hello Dan,

First off, I am jealous. That is a great part of the country to drive through.

Second, It would help if we knew a little more about your trip.
    What is your timetable?
How long do you have to get from point A to B?
When are you starting out (Early summer, late summer? It makes a difference in the southwest).
Are you going to try and offroad or is this straight pavement?
I assume you are getting a rental jeep. How many people are going to be with you and how much baggage will you be carrying?

This will help us get you some suggestions.

      preferably buy a fsj and do the ride in it;
or a small wagoneer / cherokee in good condition.
      or a scrambler :-)

scrolling through the internet. nothing decent out there for sale...
10 day window on trip. as soon as we find a jeep, we're off :-)

mostly on road but preferably not highway...

gonna be fun. just need a reliable truck that my fiance and i can drive for a few month in houston after...

i am 120 miles west of phoenix az at I-10 and US 60 and i have a tow dolly that will fit a wide track jeep so i got you covered in the middle of nowhere https://maps.google.com/?ll=33.80348...92031&z=17&t=h
I\'ve seen gsmikie\'s video for the TH400 and thought it was just awful.watching a guy tear down a greasy pile of metal in a junkyard. it dosent have to be surrounded by water to be an island

My wife and I flew to Portland OR and drove our fsj back to Brandon MS. Over 2500 miles. Nice roadtrip in a GW we knew absolutely NOTHING about. Talk about a leap of faith lol. We did it in four days through 3 blizzards, numerous road closures and detours.

          Have fun on your trip!

            What's your price range?

            Dan,

Have you thought of flying to San Francisco and driving it back? If so, there is some good options in central and northern Cali. I can pm you links.

I hate to say this on my favorite site, but If I were going to do what you are discussing, I would start looking for XJ's.
I owned an XJ before my Waggy, so please dont mis-understand, FSJ is superior in many ways, but If I were going to lay down cash for a jeep to cruise around in for a month and then sell, I would prefer the 4.0 Fuel Injected XJ that can be had for $2k - $2500 all day long in most of the major US cities.

                for instance

or the other low cost option would be Grand Cherokees for around $4k

AC is not an option IMO, it is required where you will be traveling.
You can sell these rust free vehicles for nearly what you paid for them on the other end of your trip.

If you can't make it better why waste your time. No use repeating the orignal mistakes. I'm to old to push it that's why.

                    You should do the Rubicon.

It's only about 3 hours East of the bay area.

If you're just looking for trip car and temporary transpo around Houston don't rule out an XJ. I've done 3,000 mile trips in an XJ's and it was pretty decent for road trips. (Toronto-Seattle and Seattle-New Orleans).
Unfortunately SE TX is prolly the most expensive place in the US for anything Jeep. I'd look in S LA too. If you can live with 2WD there are a zillion cheap 2WD XJ's in LA.
