Soon to be owner of 82 J10 258

Hello all. I am going to be taking delivery in the next week or 2 on a 82 J10 with a 258 I6 and automatic tranny. From what I can tell it seems to be all stock, other than the seats (the original black vinyl seats are included).

I am looking for any suggestions on where to get replacement parts or upgrades. I want to get a brushguard and possibly a rollbar.

Congrats! Where are you located? I am parting out an '82 at the moment.
You know it's bad when your car's on the EPA's 10 most wanted list!

Welcome to the insanity! For parts, BJ's Offroad and Team Grand Wagoneer will have just about anything you could need. As far as upgrades go, you're probably gonna have the messed up, computer controlled Carter BBD carburetor on the 258 (yes, computer controlled), so take it from someone who's done the same thing, do the Nutter bypass to bypass the computer if you have the BBD, then replace the BBD with a Motorcraft 2100 or 2150. I've just done the bypass so far and have a motorcraft coming in in about a week, but with just the bypass, it runs like new.

        Almost forgot to mention

Yeah, I do know the carb has problems. The person I am buying it from states that it stalls at idle at like a red light. I will take into consideration about the Motorcraft carb. I will probably get one for Christmas for myself. I've got a buddy that can rebuild the current carb for now.

A rebuild will help. And if its the BBD, the nutter bypass is one of your best friends. Just do it with connectors on the wires so you can reverse the bypass for the inspections.

Nice! and welcome from Georgia. My first recommendation would be to address the rust and electrical first. It will be money well spent and keep you from getting discouraged down the line
You can teach what you know but you can only reproduce what you are.

It makes sense if you don't think about it.

Would you say that doing either the nutter bypass or putting in a Motocraft would increase HP and MPG?

Losing the BBD and related computer will help in drivability but it's still a 258 underneath...good solid reliable low RPM tractor motor.

The truck I just got has the HEI ignition and Weber 32/36 and it runs like a top. Very good setup. The only other thing I would change might be a 4.0 cylinder head but it runs great as is.

I also have a bone stock AMC Eagle with the 258 and a working BBD carb and ignition. Runs like a top but it could definately use some more power. Between the two I'd say that a different carb will wake up a 258 BIG time.

Its funny how an 80 258 is more complicated then a 91 V8.

I think the 80's 258 models were the only FSJ's to ever have an ECM.
