I talked with Debra at KOA this evening. I may have to get an RV spot. Might as well tow the 40' 5th wheel down, if I do that. It would be a good first test for the Ol' Gladiator.

KOA sites usually start getting pretty well booked up for summer by February. There is always a chance to catch someone here who has to cancel and work it out to pick up their site.
Hay Martin, the roads in the San Juans will give most folks from the flatlands (me included) white knuckles just driving their Jeep on them. I have towed FSJs over Lizardhead on Hwy 145 but would not want to do Hwy 550 like that.Flint

It's not as bad as it looks. I pretty much have all the parts and know what I need to do. The biggest issue will probably be having the time to debug it and get some mileage on it to break in all the new parts before a major roadtrip. The frame and sheetmetal are about the only things left that are FSJ, so that leaves a lot of possible quirks and debugging.
I popped out to BJ's Offroad yesterday to pick up some parts and told Brent I publicly committed to making the Ouray trip. He was excited for me and said he went in '02 or '03 and I'd have a good time. So now I'll really be pushing to make it.
Yep, no tent spaces available. I'll probably commit to either spot 58A or 61D, then get on the waiting list for cancellations. That's what Debra suggested. Plus, you could let me know if anyone here has to back out.
I was thinking about bringing the 5th wheel because it's the primary reason why I did the major ground up rebuild/modifications to the truck. Hence, this being a good first "test" for it.
I grew up in AK and have done a 2 year stint as a truck driver hauling max-cube doubles around the 11 western states. So, as long as everything fits between the lines I feel confident I can make it. Not saying I won't have white knuckes and numb fingers when I get there.

Being the end of the world is at hand, I do plan to attend this summer. I'll be in the XJ as I am currently FSJ challenged. I do still have a transfercase, 2 doors, an old windshield and a couple WT front fenders so I'm not totally FSJ deficient.
My plans all (obviously) depend on the work situation, but I will be doing what I can to get back out there. In '10 I got just a taste as I (meaning the XJ) wasn't really prepared properly (exhaust system took a beating). I did get a few easy trails in and just loved it.
Lets see, I think the first day (Wed.) was Placer Picayne or something like that (watch out for flat tires on the way down). Then a few of us did Maggie (?). Up the mountain and back down. Spent Thursday morning putting the exhaust system back together in Montrose, then just drove around the area sight-seeing as everyone was gone by the time I got back to the KOA. Friday I drove Last Dollar road solo. I had to head home Saturday morning. I hope to stay for Saturday this time. I did arrive a couple days early and I took the opportunity to ride Durango-Silverton narrow gauge train. I recommend that if you arrive a day or so early.
I'll likely be in a motel in Ouray again. I don't have a tent or camper and the kabins are taken.N4ZYV
I ain't giving up. I've worked hard, it took me years to work my way to the bottom.

Well due to bills created by some medical issues I have had over the first half of winter have wiped out the vacation budget, so unfortunately, we are going to have to drop out. Resbum has taken over our Reservation for Site 49. I wish we could still make the trip, but first things first. Maybe we will be able to make it next year. Time will tell. Flint, can you change the name on the map for site 49 from Knuck to Resbum?81 J20 "Mater", 401/T-18/NP208, Rhino Conversion, 4" Rusty's all-spring lift, extended length front shackles, 2" rear blocks. Sure would like to attend
We were there last year and drove in the 4th of July Parade with San Juan Scenic Jeeps. Had a blast! Love to do it again this year. We rented a house just uphill from the KOA.

Thank you Knuck,
I really appreciate you sending me the PM about taking over your tent site. I owe you one. Getting the truck finished and debugged is enough pressure. Dropping the idea of hauling the 5th wheel took a load off my mind.
I look forward to meeting everyone.
